Casting The Casual Vacancy

Huffington Post took the liberty of casting The Casual Vacancy and I vehemently disagreed with many of their selections, although John Goodman as Howard Mollison was spot on. They didn’t use many British actors, though.  So I thought I would try my hand at this game, and it doesn’t escape me that many of these actors were in the Harry Potter franchise.  But I also cast from some of my favorite other Brit-filled features (like the Cate Blanchett Elizabeth movies and Showtime’s The Tudors) and I did NOT cast any of the teenagers; I just wasn’t up for that challenge (image courtesy of IMDB):

• Barry Fairbrother: Gary Oldman (but more Commissioner Gordon than Sirius Black)
• Howard Mollison:  Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) or Richard Griffiths (Vernon Dursley)
• Miles Mollison: James Frain (Cromwell from The Tudors) or Clive Owen (Sir Walter Raleigh from Elizabeth: The Golden Age… But he might be TOO good looking)
• Samantha Mollison: Maria Doyle Kennedy (Catherine of Aragon from The Tudors, with lots of pancake makeup, mascara and cleavage)
• Terri Weedon: Joanne King (Jane Boleyn from The Tudors) or Kelly McDonald (from Trainspotting, Elizabeth, and Harry Potter)
• Colin Wall: David Thewlis (Remus Lupin sans mustache)
• Tessa Wall: Julie Walters (Molly Weasley)
• Simon Price: Tony Curran (from Underworld: Evolution) or Christopher Eccleston (the smug Norfolk from Elizabeth)
• Kay Bawden: Natalia Tena (Tonks)
• Vikram Jawanda: Irrfan Khan (from The Namesake and Life of Pi)
